TODAY YEARS AGO....9 September 1978 - Joey Ippolito won the first edition of the Benihana Grand Prix West off San Francisco, his fourth career victory and third of the season aboard his first 38 Scarab powered Kiekhaefer Michelob Light along with Jack Stuteville as t-man. In a race shortened by more than half of the original course due to the bad condition of the sea, the only one cat that was presented at the start, the 35 Cougar on wood of Halpern, immediately went back in port before the start, while for the other contenders started the problems. Betty Cook, Jacoby and Martin retired as Aoki whose 38 Bertram in addition to having tossed his crew had suffered structural damage as well as the other 38 Bertram always in Kevlar built of Preston Henn. Ippolito finished the race in first place with an average of 39.04mph which says a lot about the type of competition faced. 1978 - Derek Pobjoy won the third edition of the International Torbay & 100 off Brixham, his second victory of the season and of his career, on his 37 Enfield powered Kiekhaefer, Uno Mint which is nothing more than the old and glorious Enfield Avenger in 1971, then Unowot , then Uno Embassy , then again Unowot. As was the case other times in this race the winner only had to perform the task of bringing the boat to the finish line to get it as the boat of Pobjoy and the t-man Tim Cotton, was the only OP I in the race and the only potential rivals in OP II,the trimaran of Arran and the cat of Craxford with moderate sea could counteract little the powerful mono. 1987 - Fulvio Maria Ballabio won the first heat of the Guernsey Week, around the homonymous island in the Channel, his fourth win of the season and of his career aboard the cat 38 Stain powered Isotta Fraschini turbo diesel Baby Cresci ex Outsider by Tato Bardelle in 1986. Recovered wreck happened during the race in Oregrund a month before the fast cat Ballabio with Morosini as t-man and veteran Tim Brand-Crombie as a navigator prevailed on a few OP I present including the 42 Apache hired by Colin Gerve-Brazier finished second.
