TODAY YOU ARE HERE- Kennedy Odhiambo Seven years ago when my neighbour was uprooting me When he was saying I should leave their land When his kinsmen came looting my belongings Belongings I had toiled to acquire I ran to save my life; you were protected by the government The village I once called home was a battle field And I was the enemy, no you don’t know You were away in the City. Nearly a decade when they killed all my children and wives They decided to end their lives Lives that were so dear to me I was submerged in an ocean of grief You were not there, when nature forcefully opened a new page of life for me You were in the City watching us on Aljazeera That fateful day in 2007 when my son was shot Shot by the very men who ought to have secured his life Shot and left to die in the streets He died fighting for a just society Ferried and left in the mortuary Your children were secure in the city Secured with visas in the event their home country was aglow with violence Surely, you were not here. Today you are here Standing at the flood gates of justice Telling us that The Hague is not the right way You forget the darts of pain the displaced are feeling You forget the destitute orpahans, widows and widowers People who are trying to find a home in a tent You forget the businessmen and women Who came tumbling from the high summit of economic prosperity You may forget b’coz you were not here We have to seek justice Justice must ring from every corner of the city Justice must be heard it must be seen We will never be happy until the cloud of desperation melts away and in its place Stars of hope, joy and happiness shine their radiant rays Into the eyes that once shed tear Hearts that once broke down Bodi8es that once shed blood Be here to help us please,mr politician! ----------The writer is a linguist, journalist and a budding poet--------
