TODAY has been quite incredible so far... Wandered through a local village following a sign to a school called Metta which turns out to be a boarding school for local villages (no public schools here!) A local boy takes me to introduce me to the principal who Invites me to visit the local Buddhist monk Venerable Metteyya Sakyaputta (who started the school 10 years ago) at his Ashram and he shares his history and vision with me for helping youth especially young women to get educated. His humility is palpable, he asks for nothing from me. After a wonderful time with Metteyya head back to Limbini and stop for a Chai on the way. A gentleman arrives on a motorbike and sits at the table for a chai and starts chatting, turns out hes the local MP with the current government, he asks about me so explain why I exited the system citing government corruption against that great man Allan Hubbard. He asks if I want to build a temple for New Zealanders in the sacred Lumbini garden where the Buddhas birthplace is ( they have many different countries represented with temples here but not from the west yet) gracefully explain to him no thanks and espouse my views on rather than more temples we need to empower people and that People are the land not the dirt we stand upon. He is non responsive but clearly understands,we exchange thanks and he leaves. Then head for the daily bike ride to the Buddhas birthplace to ponder and whilst sitting meditatively under this tree next to the Buddhas birthplace people start asking for photos with me... Nepal is the only place Ive ever been where the locals want a photo with you instead of the other way around, this is a group of Eastern Nepali youngsters and their principle visiting Lumbini who wanted this picture so asked them to also take one for me too :-) LOVING NEPAL!
