TONIGHT! 6 years ago, on my 40th birthday, I flew one-way to Paris from New York via Dublin. Upon arrival I went directly to Shakespeare and Company Bookshop to see Maria DArcy read/recite James Joyces Ulysses. Ulysses was published by Shakespeare and Company in Paris when Joyce was 40 years old...since then, June 16 has been a festival in Dublin--Bloomsday--based on that day in the life of Leopold Bloom. And since I moved to Paris in 2008, every year Maria and I have hosted a Bloomsday celebration at Swan Bar (the owner of Swan Bar, whose name coincidentally is Lionel Bloom), is a former literature professor and Joyce aficionado. Even when I spent 9 months in New York in 2009-2010, and 1 year in San Francisco in 2010-2011, I came to Paris for the summer and played Irish songs for Bloomsday at Swan on my birthday. We continue the tradition tonight. Lots of dramatic readings from Ulysses, some dancing, lots of Irish songs, and featured guest Triinu Tammsalu.
