TONIGHT IS HOSHANA RABBAH. There is a custom for men to stay up the night of hoshana Rabbah, this year it falls on Tuesday night, oct 14. Why? because until then everyone has another opportunity to tweak or intercept the judgment that was stamped on Yom Kippur. As per Aish it says in the Zohar that on this day (hoshana rabbah) all the decrees that were sealed on Yom Kippur are dispatched. An unfavorable sentence can still be torn up through a sincere repentance. So everyone can use simcha/happiness and do teshuva, to tear up a (chas veShalom) unfavorable judgment.
