TONY OBUH JOINED HRM ASAGBA (PROF) J.C. AND AGUNWAYI MODUPE EDOZIEN TO CELEBRATE THE NEW YAM FESTIVAL IN A GRAND STYLE AT THE ASAGBA’S PALACE IN ASABA. By: Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe. The arrival of the PDP Gubernatorial candidate, Sir Tony Chuks Obuh at the royal palace of the Asagba of Asaba, for the celebration of the 2014 New Yam Festival received a thunderous ovation and royal drum beats, amplified with a royal red carpet reception. Accompanied by a routine of top class chiefs from Agbon Kingdom, PDP party faithful and dignitaries, the Guber aspirant and his wife of inestimable value, Lady Esther Ogor Obuh caught the fancy of the huge audience who received the entourage with dignified dance steps and well crafted royal songs. The PDP Guber aspirant told newsmen on his arrival at the palace that he came to pay homage to the Asaba Monarch. He said: “His Royal Majesty is a dignified first class royal father in the State. He is the unifying factor of the Asaba people worldwide. The first Professor of Medicine in Nigeria to ascend the traditional throne of his ancestors. He became the Dean of Faculty of Medicine of the University College, Ibadan in 1962 and has assumed the enviable status of Professor Emeritus. He is my royal father, I love him with great passion and I count myself highly privileged to be a special guest at this event. I will spend my day here with my royal father and other royal fathers here present and if possible do all such things today as may be directed by our royal father.” In an answer to a reporter’s question as to the agitation of Delta Central to produce the next Governor of Delta State, Sir Obuh has this to say: “I will not call the request of our people in Delta Central as agitation, rather I will prefer to call it their aspiration to have one of their own become the Governor in 2015. Agitation is associated, to a large extent, with militancy and my people in Delta Central are not militants. They have played enviable roles in the development and advancement of constitutional democracy in Delta State in particular and Nigeria in Nigeria”. “I love my Delta Central brothers and sisters so much and we are going to work together in the present political dispensation. In my earlier remark elsewhere, I have tried to address the fears of our people in Delta Central by promising to constitute an all inclusive government where the three senatorial districts in the state will be well represented on equal basis in terms of political appointments and overall socio-economic development of the State. My administration, if voted into power in 2015, will be anchored on equity, justice, collective responsibility and good conscience.” “I very much think that their fears are closely related to the fact that if a Delta North person becomes the Governor of the State, they will be relegated to the background in terms of appointments at state and federal as well as distribution of development. As genuine as these fears could be, I make bold to say that because of my detribalized nature and my strong Christian values, I will not and will never do such things as to be bias or consider ethnicity in my spread of appointments and development across the state if elected Governor in 2015. To this end, I strongly believe that my brothers and sisters in Delta Central will partner with me as events unfolds so that we can together take our state from where we are now to where we want to become. They should not entertain any fear because I will fix things to the satisfaction of our people in three senatorial districts which constitutes the political and economic structure of Delta State. My intentions are contained in a printed document titled: OUR VISION, and will be made public to Deltans in the near future.” The palace of His Royal Majesty, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. J.C. Edozien was filled to capacity as sons and daughters, traditional rulers, representatives of corporate bodies, politicians and guests from United Nations gathered at the expansive royal Palace of the first class Monarch to join in the celebration of the 2014 New Yam Festival in the ancient city of Asaba. The event which kicked-off with a seven cannon gun salute to herald the entry of the Asaba Monarch was smooth, exciting and superlative. The almost 90 years old Royal father and his loved and sparkling Queen and Royal Mother of the Asaba people, Agunwanyi (Mrs.) Modupe Clara Edozien, radiated in beeded royal attire specifically designed for such auspicious occasion. The royal mother of the Asaba people, who could not resist the royal songs and drum beats dished out by the Yoruba Community in Asaba, gave the audience some calculated and dignified royal dance steps, to add extra royal blend to the celebration. The entire spectators, excluding the Asagba, stood up in thunderous ovation chanting royal encomiums on the royal queen. The Agunwayi is a royal blood of late Herbert Macaulay of the Yoruba extraction which hitherto consolidated the Asaba ancestral linkage with the Yoruba nation. In his remarkable speech from the throne, the Asagba poured encomium on multiple award winning Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Iweta Uduaghan, for his giant strides in infrastructural developments in the State especially the construction of the Asaba International Airport, which he described as ‘uncommon transformation in the air transportation sector in Delta State”. The monarch said Gov. Uduaghan is a highly detribalized Deltan who has enrolled his name in the scroll of honours across the globe as a result of his open-mindedness and proactive leadership qualities. The Asagba of Asaba recalled how through the efforts of the State Governor and his cabinet recommended the creation of Anioma State and the abolition of the obnoxious Land Use Act to the just concluded national conference. He posited that the Anioma State creation which finally got the approval of the conference and included in its final report was the executive efforts of Gov. Uduaghan and as such announced the conferment of a first class Asaba chieftaincy title on the Governor. The title, his majesty disclosed, will be conveyed in a royal letter to the state governor and will be delivered by a powerful delegation from the Asaba royal palace within the next couple of days. The hallmark of the occasion was the paying of homage by symbolic cutting of the new yam (Iwa-Iji) as well as seven cannon shots to announce the withdrawal of HRM from the Arena.
