Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has resigned after a parting of ways with his top ally rendered his government a minority amid a rapid realignment of political ties ahead of next month’s state assembly elections. Chavan’s resignation, submitted to governor CV Rao, is more of a formality and it is expected the state will be placed under President’s Rule until a new government takes charge after the October 15 vote. 2. India and China have resolved the stand-off at the Ladakh border and withdrawal of troops will begin on Friday and be completed by September 30, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said, describing the resolution of the issue as a big accomplishment. 3. An Indian origin girl is among three children who have been nominated for the International Childrens Peace Prize 2014. The International Childrens Peace Prize is an initiative of the Amsterdam-based childrens rights organisation KidsRights 4. Pakistan has successfully test-fired short range surface-to-surface missile Hatf IX that has a range of 60 kilometres and can cover parts of India. The test of the missile also called Nasr was conducted with successive launches of four missiles from a state-of-the-art Multi Tube Launcher with Salvo Mode, the military said. 5. Rating agency Standard & Poors has reversed its opinion about the Indian economy and upgraded the rating outlook to stable from negative while maintaining the credit rating at BBB-. This is a major change from its position last year when it said India faces one in three chances of a downgrade. 8. The Tamil Nadu Government today announced a populist ‘Amma Cement Scheme’ under which it will procure cement from private manufacturers and sell them at Rs. 190 per bag in the wake of possible increase in rates of the key construction component. The scheme, named after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who is addressed as ‘Amma’ (Mother) by her supporters, follows similar efforts like the Amma Canteen and Amma Mineral Water, all low-cost initiatives. 9. Ten scientists from across premier Indian research institutions have been selected for the countrys prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award for the year 2014. This annual award is conferred to selected scientists for their outstanding works in the field of science and technology. It consists of a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation and a plaque. The award was announced on Friday by P S Ahuja, director general of the Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) during the CSIRs 72st foundation day celebrations here. 10. The G4 group of nations — India, Brazil, Germany and Japan — have voiced concern that discussions to reform the UN Security Council are still at a “stalemate,” underscoring that the process should not be an “endless exercise’’. “The G4 Ministers underscored their continuous commitment to a Security Council reform reflective of the geopolitical realities of the 21st century.
