TOP DRIVE Top drive systems are used to rotate the drill string and allow adding a 93- ft stand of drill pipe, eliminating two thirds of the conventional single-pipe drilling connections. A TDS system is a specially designed electric or hydraulic motor that provides the rotating power of a conventional rotary table drive while eliminating the need to “pick up” the weighty swivel/Kelly combination. It allows tripping, circulation, rotation and the running of casing as well as providing 90-ft back reaming capabilities to reduce the chance of stuck pipe. Using the top drive system enables drilling to be carried out stand by stand instead of joint by joint and similarly reduces the no of connections to be made. Posted By #NoMiRaZa
