TORAH GEM TO SHARE - TERUMAH This Shabbat is Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Adar 1. Shabbat Shekalim this year is on March1. May they bring to us the blessings of Hashem. Have you ever wondered why you were created? What is the purpose of your existence? Such a simple question! Many people have an opinion on the subject: to be good, to study Torah, to perform the Mitzvot, to give charity and to be kind to others. All excellent answers but hidden in the first few verses of our Parshah is the best answer. Parshat Terumah begins with the important mitzvah of Tzedaka and how Tzedaka is really justice not charity. Tzedaka means understanding that just as Hashem provides for our needs, we too must give to others. Our sages say that categories of gold, silver and copper, hint at how to observe this important Mitzvah. The gold standard is giving while one is strong and healthy. Silver implies giving when one is somewhat ill and perhaps older, and copper applies to the person who no longer needs his worldly possessions and leaves his Tzedaka in his will. We should always strive to make our Tzedaka good as Gold. As for the purpose of ones life: Tzedaka, Torah study and Mitzvah observance are certainly of paramount importance, but chapter 25 verse 8 holds the key. Vasu Le Mikdash, Vshachanti Btochom. And they shall make for me a sanctuary so that I may dwell among them. Our purpose is to build a home in this world for Hashem. Torah and Mitzvot are the tools Hashem provides for us, and as we build, so too does Hashem build a home for us in His world. Use your unique G-d given gifts and bring some heaven down to earth! Kol Tov! Our best to you...its all good. Shabbat Shalom, CM
