TORQUAY 2 START WITH A LOSS The Premier campaign for Torquay 2 started this Monday and proved to be a difficult start. They hosted Devon Cup champions Exeter Golf and Country Club. First on the Glass Back court was Nigel Ball of Torquay against Robbie Brown of Exeter. Ball got off to a slow start as Brown took control early winning the first 11-4. The nerves settled and the second game was a lot closer, Ball came out on top winning it 11-9 levelling the match. That momentum couldn’t continue and Brown played some good squash to win the next two games convincingly 11-5 and 11-6 giving the away side an early lead. There was a close affair on court 4 between the string 4’s. Richard Crook was up against Exeter’s Keith Parnell. This was match of the night as Crook took the first game 11-6. Parnell then levelled 1-1 winning the second 11-8. But back came Crook getting in front again winning the third 11-8. Parnell ensured the match was going the distance taking the fourth 11-6. The match was really in the balance, again though it was the away player crossing the winning line taking the fifth 11-9! Next on the glass back the string two’s battled it out. Jack Barnes of Torquay had to win to keep Torquay in the match, but he had to overcome an experienced Gary Bennett. Bennett used a variety of shots and took the first game 11-9. Barnes got a grip on the match in the second playing some top squash. He took the next two games well 11-6 and 11-5. Despite a close third Barnes held his nerve to win the match in four winning the fourth 11-9. Giles Cooper-Smith and Andy Street were next on court 4. Cooper-Smith needing a win didn’t get off to the start he had hoped for losing the first two games 11-7. But the home player dug in deep to win the third 11-8. Street held it together and won the fourth 11-6 giving the night to Exeter with a match still to be played. Last on were the string one players. Torquay’s Ben Sutton was against Christian Turner. The first two games were both tight but Sutton just couldn’t finish Turner off and found himself 2-0 down both games ending 11-9. It was always going to be a tough task bringing it back as Turner’s well known for his superb fitness, Sutton couldn’t get a grip on the third and Turner also took that one 11-4. The final score was 18-7 in favour of Exeter. This wasn’t the start Torquay 2 had in mind but plenty of time to turn that all around.
