TOWARDS A YOUTHFUL AND MORE MEANINGFUL REPRESENTAION I, Prince AROYEWUN TAOFEEK ADEYINKA was born in the early 70s, to the family of Alhaji (Otunba) Rasheed Babalola Omotayo Aroyewun. Late Otunba Onadugba and the immediate past secretary of the Rademo ruling House of Ikorodu and Alhaja Aroyewun from the Babagunwa Family in Ikorodu. I attended Local Government Primary School now Home Economic Centre Ikorodu and Ikorodu Grammar School. I proceeded to Lagos State College of Education now Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin, where I obtained a National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Economics and Mathematics and Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U) Ile-Ife, where I obtained my first Degree (B.Sc.) in Economics. After my youth service, I worked with the National Electric Power Authority before I joined my family business of Bateru General Agencies Limited, a licensed custom’s agency to run the business of clearing and forwarding in Nigeria. - An active member of the Ikorodu Grammar School old Student’s Association. - A member of the immediate past National Executive committee of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education Alumni Association. - A member of National Clearing Agents of Nigeria. - A member of the P.D.P State monitoring committee, member of People’s Democratic Party Local Government candidates forum (2008) at the State level and the chairman of the Ikorodu Local Government PDP candidates forum for 2008 Local Government Election. - I am a very strong advocate of equitable distribution of power and representation, which inform the reason I and some like minds established “ASIKOTO MOVEMENT” an association with the aim of awakening Ikorodu indigenes towards the realization of the “Ikorodu for Governor’’ project. The project which has been abandoned since it could not be realized in 2007 is now tending towards actualization. As the chairman of this association, we wrote to and visited many worthy sons and daughters of Ikorodu Division urging them to aspire to represent the division at the state house as Governor of Lagos State by 2015. All traditional rulers, religious organizations, social and all other organization were visited and mobilized to support the project. The project is successful, as we now have many credible personalities from Ikorodu division across all political parties in the country contesting as the governor of this state. Arch Taiwo Kara, Sen. Ganiu Solomon both of APC, Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi, Amb. Olatokunbo Kamson, Barr. Owolabi Salis, Mr. Jimi Agbaje of PDP and Mr. Mutairu Ogidi from Labour Party among others are all eminently qualified to govern Lagos. GOING FORWARD In the same way, it is worthy of note that Ikorodu Federal Constituency has been represented at the National Assembly since 1999 by indigenes from constituency 1. Hon. Odujirin (Ward A4) 1999 – 2003, Hon. Abike Dabiri (Ward A1) 2003 to date. This makes it almost 16years of constituency 1 representing our Federal Constituency. The minority constituency (Ikorodu Constituency 2) deserves to be given the chance to represent us, in the spirit of equal participation, rotation and federal character principle. I hereby present myself to serve us in this capacity. I am from Ward C2 in Igbogbo. My youthfulness and family ties which spread across all major towns of this division (Rademo / Mosene in Ikorodu Gbarule-Obateru Royal Family in Egbin/Ijede and Aroyewun compound of Igbogbo/Baiyeku) has given me the required relationship to make a more meaningful representation for the constituency. Ikorodu Federal Constituency deserves a more domestic representation. A functional Constituency office. We are the only division in Lagos State that has only one Local Government. We deserve more than what we have, my representation shall work to achieve an additional substantial Local government, better than the INCHOATE LCDA’s as we have it now. Our challenge in Ikorodu includes low level of commerce, though we have the largest industrial area in West Africa. As an economist, my representation shall support laws and motion that shall help up develop industrially, hereby assist in creating employment and other infrastructure. Lagos is the most populous state in Nigeria, “A mini Nigeria” amongst the Local Government areas in Lagos, Ikorodu has the capacity to expand as we have a lot of undeveloped land. My representation shall sponsor motions at the House to ensure that the Federal government is involved in the development of this Local government. The Egbin Thermal Station which provides for a substantial percentage of the electricity supply to Nigeria is now in the hands of private owners with little or no reasonable share of the proceed to the host community, my representation shall work very hard on the initiation of bills that will make us benefit more from our endowment. I will not shirk my oversight responsibilities in order to bring direct benefit to the people as intended by the spirit and letter of the relevant laws and regulations. The voices of my constituents shall be heard loudly in Abuja, drawing from the resolution of the consultative council and town hall meetings. I shall set-up a consultative council made up of members drawn from all age groups and segments of the society and help me stay in touch with my constituents. I shall champion enabling legislation to enhance education at all levels and areas as a tool for creating knowledge based society. Let’s join hands to take Ikorodu Constituency to the next level…The time for a positive change is NOW!
