TRAVEL: JAPAN ARCHITECTURAL TOUR 12 – 26 May 2015 JOIN AN EXCITING TOUR IN JAPAN LED BY JULIAN COOKE. ONLY 24 PEOPLE MAXIMUM Japanese traditional architecture, through the engagement of architects such as Wright and Gropius, had a profound influence on 20th century architecture, and still has many lessons for contemporary practice. This tour will start in Kyoto where there is an extraordinary abundance of historical work. We will visit the great Zen Buddhist temple precinct of Daitokoji, the Kiyomozo-dera complex in the forest above the city, the exquisite Gold Pavilion and perfect Ryoanji temple – and many others. Within a day’s drive are two major sites to visit: the early Buddhist temples at Nara and the heart of Shintoism at Ise. The next destination is Osaka, close to Kyoto, which is the centre of much of Tadao Ando’s work: the Saiyamake Museum, Mount Rokko Chapel, Chapel of Light, Chikatsu-Asuka Museum, Himeji City Museum and Water Temple. On Day 9, we take a bullet train to Takayama, a beautiful historic town with famous timber houses and a cultural museum. The trip ends with five days in Tokyo, a huge city bursting with new architecture. We will focus on the work of three architects: Kenzo Tange, Fumihiko Maki and Toyo Ito, but of course there is far more to see than that.
