TRIBUTE TO A FALLEN HERO: Sunny Ofili, Special Adviser to the Government of Delta State on ICT/Head Ministry of Science & Technology. Francis Akenami I first met Mr. Sunny Ofili during the Launching Summit of Delta Diaspora Direct (D3), by His Excellency, Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, Sept 1-2, 2009, at the Millennium United Nations Plaza Hotel, New York, USA. During that summit attended by the Governor of Delta State and many of his appointees, Sunny Ofili, then a private IT professional in Maryland USA was a participant and served as the moderator, where he masterfully and professionally mid-wifed the events of the day to the admiration of everyone in attendance. Needless to say, I was the Global Coordinator of D3 then. Thereafter, Sunny Ofili was appointed ICT consultant to the Government of Delta State and he moved back to Nigeria with his family. After the 2011 Delta State gubernatorial election, the Governor of Delta State Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan graciously appointed him the Special Adviser on ICT and Head of the Ministry of Science and Technology. He was very brilliant and had 21st century ideas for Delta State. Amongst many of his achievements was the provision of 1-2 Computers and a generating set for every public secondary school in Delta State. To me that was very impressive and could have been the beginning of further programmes towards computer literacy in secondary schools by the Government of Delta State. I understand he was also building an ICT village somewhere in Delta State. He was aspiring to become a member of the Delta State House of Assembly in 2015. Sunny Ofili, an indigene of Issele-Azagba near Asaba, died yesterday in a ghastly motor accident in Delta State, Nigeria. He was married with three children. Sunny Ofili, all you did was leave a comfortable professional life in USA behind to contribute your quota towards the growth and development of Delta State. A passion we both shared in great measures. Your dreams were truncated but you fought a good fight.
