TRIVIA: LATIN-DERIVED LANGUAGES... THE ANSWER by OdlerRobert Jeanlouie Which one (1) of the following six (6) languages does NOT derive from Latin? Spanish, Portuguese, French, Polish, Romanian, Italian The answer is: Polish The winner is: Nahomie Deliard Polish is a Slavic language, not a Latin-derived language. There are 47 Latin-derived languages, otherwise called Romance languages. Five major languages are directly derived from Latin: Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian. The other 42 Romance languages are step children or grand children of Latin; Catalan the language spoken in Barcelona is one of them. These languages, including Italian, derived not from the purest form of Latin but from Vulgar Latin, a form of broken Latin spoken by merchants and soldiers dispersed over the vast Roman empire. What is Latin? Latin is an Indo-European language spoken by the inhabitants of Rome. Rome, an Italian city-state, grew, through military feats, into a major empire that covered, not only Southern Europe, but Western Europe and Northern Africa, down to the Eastern and Western parts of the Mother Continent. Roman military might lasted more than 1,000 years (!), from 753 BC to 476 AC. There was no escape for the people and nations it dominated and subjugaged to end up adopting, at least partly, its language and its culture. Despite the fact that 60% of English words have a Latin root, English itself is classified as a Germanic language, not a Latin language. (OdlerRobert Jeanlouie, Sunday, September 1, 2013)
