TROOP I NEWS RELEASE July 9, 2014 Troopers Investigate Fiery 18 Wheeler Crash on Interstate 10 Acadia Parish- The eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the Estherwood / Iota exit remains closed following a head-on collision between two 18 wheelers shortly before 6:00 pm this evening. Troopers, first responders, and recovery crews are actively investigating the fiery crash and working to clear the scene and reopen the roadway as soon as possible. Preliminary investigation revealed that an 18 wheeler traveling west on I-10 crossed the median and hit another18 wheeler in a head-on collision in the eastbound lanes. After impact, both vehicles caught fire with one coming to rest across the eastbound lanes of I-10 and the other off the right side of the roadway. The crash resulted in fatal injuries for both drivers. Due to the extent of the damage and fire, Troopers are still working to gather vehicle information and identify the drivers. This crash remains under investigation with roadway updates to be forthcoming. While the crash remains under investigation, Troopers urge all motorists to be vigilant behind the wheel especially during times of inclement weather. Taking the time to slow down, ensuring all passengers are properly restrained, and avoiding distractions can mean the difference between life and death.
