TROPICALToward Caribbean First Posted: 07/09/13 EDT Updated: 07/09/13 EDT share this story 62 1 28 Tropical Storm Chantal churned toward the smaller islands of Lesser Antilles on Tuesday, including Saint Lucia and Martinique. The residents of Saint Lucia were forced to shutter schools and are preparing to close two airports due to the high winds. The fast-moving storm had maximum sustained winds near 50 mph, with some strengthening expected over the next two days. It remains unclear whether or not Chantal will be a threat to the US as the storm must overcome many barriers before it would reach Florida. Chantal is centered roughly 390 miles east-southeast of Barbados and is moving west-northwest at 26 mph. According to the Hurricane Center, Chantal was expected to move over the small islands early Tuesday, and be near the Dominican Republic by Wednesday. Chantal could be near hurricane strength before it reaches Hispaniola, an island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti -- two countries very vulnerable to flooding and landslides. In a national address Monday evening, Saint Lucian Prime Minister Kenny Anthony urged people to stay at home until the storm passed. For the full story, click here. STORM:
