TROY – The Library/Technology Building on Troy University’s Dothan Campus has been named in honor of former Second District Congressman Terry Everett. The University’s Board of Trustees approved a resolution on Friday renaming the building R. Terry Everett Hall. “In public service, private business and as a newspaper man, Terry Everett has spent his life on building southeast Alabama,” said Trustee Charles Nailen, of Dothan. “Troy University appreciates what he’s done for our nation, our state and for the Wiregrass. He’s a man who rolled up his sleeves and got the job done.” Everett, a Dothan native, served in the House of Representatives from 1993-2009. During his tenure in Congress, Everett served on the House Committee on Agriculture, the House Committee on Armed Services and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. A collection of his private papers are housed in a special section of the library on the Dothan Campus. Prior to his public service, Everett enjoyed successful careers as a newspaper executive, a farmer and a contractor. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force as an intelligence specialist in Europe. “What I want young people to understand is their achievements are limited only by their thoughts and dreams, and what they are willing to work for,” Everett said. “Success is available if you will work for it.” He and his wife Barbara make their home in Enterprise. In other business, the Board heard a report on a strategic plan for the University’s Dothan Campus. The plan outlined four strategic initiatives: Support the Dothan community’s expanding role as a regional medical center; support business growth in the Dothan community; support regional K-16 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives; and support the growth of cultural arts and international programs in the Wiregrass region. The Board also approved a resolution establishing the Center for Water Resource Economics that will be housed in the Sorrell College of Business on the Phenix City Campus and approved a $229,359,000 budget for 2013-2014, representing a 5 percent decrease over 2012-2013.
