TROYS SONG OF THE DAY ( special birthday dedication to Ms. Alicia Puente Norhawitz !) - Alices Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie. Born Arlo Davey Guthrie on July 10th, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York; Arlo was born the son to famous folk singer Woody This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is Mine Guthrie. Woody, whom is considered by many today as an activist long before the term was coined; had a huge influence on Arlo as a child. Alice was actually based a true incident that took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1965, when Arlo & his friend Richard Robbins went to visit friends & restaurant owner Alice Brock & her husband Ray for Thanksgiving dinner. Alice & her husband had purchased an old church & converted it into their living residence & since it was a holiday & no trash services, & the local dump was closed; Arlo & Richard decided to go dump Alices trash in a neighboring town. This is where they were both arrested! The rest of the song is basically a Viet Nam War protest song, though its true meaning is somewhat cloaked by the ragtime style guitar riff, & catchy chorus You can get anything you want at Alices Restaurant throughout the song. Billboard magazine never considered the song a single, due to its over 18 minute song length, and so Arlo is considered a one hit wonder , due in part to his 1972 release of City of New Orleans, which made it into the top ten, & met Billboards time guidelines. Billboard or not, the song would go on to inspire a movie in 1969 based on the song. Originally released in October of 1967 under the title of Alices Restaurant Massacree; I offer this little ditty as a birthday dedication to you, Miss Alice!!!
