(TRT) Public TV Channel is at Government’s Service in Turkey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first round of Presidential elections in Turkey will be held on 10 August 2014. Three candidates have started their campaigns for these elections and they have been trying to influence Turkish voters’ decisions. AKP’s candidate is Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, CHP and MHP’s mutual candidate is Prof. Dr. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu and HDP’s candidate is Selahattin Demirtaş. Recently, HDP’s candidate Selahattin Demirtaş has sued TRT (public television channel) for openly supporting Erdoğan’s campaign and ignoring the meetings of other two candidates. Turkish laws state that TRT is officially an “impartial” media organ. But in practice it is under the full control of Erdoğan’s government. According to a research, between 4 and 6 July 2014, TRT’s channels broadcasted news related to Erdoğan’s campaign for 533 minutes. On the other hand, TRT broadcasted Prof. İhsanoğlu’s campaign for only 3 minutes 30 seconds and Demirtaş’s campaign for 1 minute 20 seconds. These are the statistics that were prepared by considering three days. When the time period is extended, results become much more dramatic. All Turkish citizens pay taxes for TRT and financially contribute TRT’s budget whether they like that media organ’s policy or not. Mr. Demirtaş has sued TRT for compensation and demanded a symbolic amount of 100 Turkish liras (50 US dollars). Mr. Demirtaş’s lawyer claimed that TRT is acting unjustly and is violating Turkish Constitution with this broadcasting policy.
