TRUE PROSPERITY 1 Timothy 6:6-12 ‘Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.’ My precious friends in Christ, today much of the teaching in the Church revolves around the topic of prosperity. However the prosperity that is preached today is far away from what the Word of God teaches us. The current new teachings are all about owing great wealth, big houses, fancy cars and basically makes people desire and lust after money more than love the Lord with all their heart. But what is prosperity according to the Word of God? Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 ‘But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.’ Yes precious friends this is exactly what Paul writes to Timothy as well in the portion of scripture above. He tells Timothy be content with what you have received and do not lust after the temporary stuff the world has to offer because when you leave this earth you are not going to take them with you. Instead focus on the spiritual things and grow in the Lord and develop a godly lifestyle. Yes precious friends our primary aim in life must be to please God and ensure that we are in right standing with God so that we may lay hold on eternal life. So what about our life here on earth? Don’t we need money to live? Well here is what the Word of God says. 1 Timothy 6:17 ‘Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty (proud), nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.’ Philippians 4:19 ‘And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’ Trust in God and seek Him first and He will take care of the rest. What you need He will provide (Matthew 6:25-32) and what you desire He will give from above because every good gift and every perfect gift is from above (James 1:17). Do not run after money or be greedy for earthly possessions. Do not compete with people and end up falling into a financial mess. I have seen this happening to so many young people who are already drowning in a sea of debt with 4-5 credit cards and unable to repay them. Wait patiently and let the Lord bless you. As He blesses you, be content with what you have received from Him knowing fully well the Lord that blessed you with this blessing will also bless you more in the days ahead because your future is in His Hands.
