TRUE STORY In 1968, when I was a mere 18 years old, I was driving down Weber Road about 10:30 at night when I noticed a guy lying on the side of the road across the street from the Safari Lounge. I thought that he had been hit by a car, so I stopped. Lucky for him that there were no cell phones in those days because I probably would have just called 911. Instead, I found that this guy had come out of the Safari and was so drunk that he had passed out in the gutter. He was an enlisted sailor from NAS and he begged me not to call anyone...but, instead, get him out to the base and into his quarters before his 11:00 curfew. In todays world I would not even consider doing something like that. But, in 1968, I got the poor guy loaded into my car and headed for the base. A sympathetic guard at the entrance actually allowed me to go onto the base and to the guys barracks. (I cant imagine such a thing being allowed in todays world). By this time, he was out cold! I followed the signs to the enlisted barracks, but had no idea which one was his. I found one with several other sailors outside and they assisted in getting this guy inside. I suspect that they had been in similar situations themselves as they were very grateful for my rescuing this guy. The following day, I discovered that the man had left a sack on the floorboard of my car. Inside was an un-opened bottle of Jack Daniels. My good deed to a sailor in need, I felt, had been more than sufficiently rewarded! Btw...the Safari is still with us, and still on Weber Road.
