TSSOM CRUISE UPDATE: May 13, 2014 Location: N 38 39.4 W 055 04.5 Course: 090 Speed 15.2 kt Weather: Sunny to Partly Cloudy Wind: SW 18 kt Seas: Moderate SW Swell Another day of mostly clear weather has the Bosun smiling as more topside chipping and painting was accomplished. Students are learning industry safety standards for working aloft, using safety harnesses and belaying lines. Be sure to ask your student about the joys of using a needle gun and chipping hammer for several hours. The Ships Electrician has had students out on light patrol. Perhaps a future fact to be included in our blog will be the number of lights on the TSSOM. For right now, they are busy identifying those lights that are failing or burned out and getting replacements installed. Meanwhile, Alpha Company (on Utility) is cleaning the fan rooms (see todays Fact of the Day) in preparation for Bravo Company (on Maintenance) to paint. Currents and winds have conspired to move us along at a higher speed than we had projected so we are expecting no problem making Trieste the morning of May 26. Todays TSSOM Fact of the Day comes from Cadet Relief Engineer Eliza Pingree: There are 18 supply, 13 circulation, and 25 exhaust fans, for a total of 56 ventilation fans aboard. Forty-nine are located in the twelve fan rooms, and the others are located in the overheads of laundry rooms and lockers.
