TTs chocolate - the richest in the world, La Reunion Estate wins the International Cocoa Award Cocoa from the Government operated La Reunion Estate has won the International Cocoa Award at the recently concluded 2013 Salon du Chocolate in Paris France. Trinidad and Tobago has again solidified its reputation as a producer of the exquisite and distinctive fine or flavor cocoa. Previously, cocoa from Trinidad and Tobago won Awards at the Salon du Chocolat in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Minister of Food Production, Senator Devant Maharaj congratulated the staff of La Reunion Estate on an excellent crop production noting that, “our chocolate is the richest in the world.” Of the four cocoa estates from Trinidad and Tobago to enter cocoa samples in the competition, La Reunion Estate, which is the largest cocoa estate still owned and operated by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, was among fifteen estates from thirteen cocoa-producing countries to receive the coveted award. La Reunion Estate also received an International Cocoa Award in 2010. The Salon du Chocolat is an international chocolate show, which seeks to showcase chocolate producers, manufacturers and artisan craftsmen, as well as to facilitate collaborative relationships among all stakeholders in the cocoa and chocolate industry. In 2013, the top 50 of the 114 cocoa bean samples submitted for competition were processed into chocolate and presented to a jury of more than 30 chocolate professionals and cocoa experts for the selection of the winners of the International Cocoa Award. The Trinidad Selected Hybrids (TSH) cocoa varieties developed by the Ministry of Food Production at La Reunion Estate excel across the full spectrum of flavour for fruity, floral, nutty and spicy notes. It serves for both commercial production and research and cocoa breeding and has provided training to farmers of commercially grown cocoa in Trinidad and Tobago, which is the birthplace of the world-renowned Trinitario cocoa germplasm. Margaret King-Rousseau, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to France, received the Award on behalf of the Government, at a formal handing-over Ceremony during the Salon du Chocolat Professional Show, which was attended by world-class chocolatiers, pastry chefs, confectioners and ice cream makers, as well as distribution networks, hotels, restaurants and other key players in the industry. A cocoa estate owner from Trinidad and Tobago was also in attendance and held discussions with European chocolatiers.
