TUESDAY 1st JULY 1997: B I G day! My first day at Virgin. Woo hoo! I got up at 6am as planned, despite having less than six hours of sleep. I played Bitter Sweet Symphony as its the soundtrack to this era of my life. A new start. I also played Bryan Ferry Dance With Life which Ive recently rediscovered. Anyway, I got a lift to the station via Mum at Argos from Dad. An hour before my train was due to arrive, I bought NME and read that. Once I got there, I met loads of people in the office all at once. Andy arrived later but I met Rob (another bigwig) who seems fine and is always flitting from one place to another. Then theres Dave who was freckly and had bags under his eyes (Im only saying what I remember most!) Rachel has an almost Geordie accent and seems very organised and efficient. Except she had a hangover. Alan is a walkie talkie (oh yes, they have those) fan but not a pigeon. Anthonys the Roadmender freak but his skin is mouldy. And he didnt particularly talk to me either. But then neither did Alan. But I was around Ant more. Martin the security guys dead accommodating and he did my security/health and training induction. Sarahs always happy and her teeth are always on show. God, if I do do that in the way that I think I do, then it is a gay personality trait. Doh! Anyway, shes quite attractive but by the end of the day I decided I didnt fancy her. Not that she did anything to cause that. Then theres Joli who *IS* jolly! She sings and whistles and boogies to the music behind the till. She also went: Ha soh! and did similar signs with some Chinese videos which I thought was quite funny. Chinkies may find it offensive though, thinking about it... Upstairs in processing, I met Norman who looks 5 and Nigel who looks 50. Im being a little harsh here arent I. They have a laundry chute to send product down to the shop floor! Oh, they sold 151 copies of Prodge yesterday. I personally sold 3 in an hour. Hmm... Dave did my till training. I could have kicked myself for forgetting to bring my till book down with me and *THEN* bringing the wrong book down. Doh! It was pretty straightforward, though it took a long time. Im not sure how impressed or unimpressed he was. I took the time I needed. I suppose its just training in an understaffed store - I know how it is. He wasnt dead friendly or anything. He just wasnt warm. On lunch, I stayed in the building. You have to clock out and be searched blah blah. I dont like that but then neither does Martin! I carried on reading my till training package, whilst Dave and Ant discussed football. Hmm. How interesting... Then Jaime and co turned up: Theres a call for you downstairs. I told Jaime it was going alright and waved to Alex in singles. Katherine was wearing her new Brownies t-shirt and was looking for David Devant. Later on, once on the till for real with Joli (who I found really easy to click with), *NICE* Steve (friend of Alanis and Helen, occasional Wedge goer) came in. He was really cheery towards me, so I was pleased. Hed been to Glasto and had come to us for the Glasto promo CD we were giving away. I also did - woo hoo - header cards!! But not for long as I took my till off and got that bit sorted. I then had to sign my contract (but didnt get a copy!) and go through personal details with Andy. He wasnt cheery like in the interview. Yet he wasnt in a mood. He works you hard, Sarah told me. Ive got to impress him if I want to be kept on. So my day was done. I had my stuff checked, got me mags, but forgot to get additional t-shirts! Either side of dinner, I went through my induction book. I eventually finished it at 10:51pm and I need to be up at 5:45am to get the 7:13am bus tomorrow. I start at 8:45am! Ive got the video running for Paul Wellers Heavy Soul 30 minute live thing on Channel 4 and Im off to bed!
