TUESDAY, July 2 1 Samuel 11:1-15. And the spirit of God came upon Saul in power when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. As Christians we often believe that anger is wrong. But in this passage anger comes from the spirit of God, and it enables Saul to lead men into battle for the first time. His anger causes the people of Israel to follow him as he rescues fellow Israelites under siege. Because my sister and I were not allowed to express anger, growing up, I did not understand that I could be angry—not until my husband got cancer and was not getting well, in spite of prayers and chemotherapy. Sitting on the back porch, terrified that Jack was dying, I exploded at God. I screamed and cursed God and said I wanted no part of a God who would let Jack die. I dared God to strike me dead. Nothing happened for three days. Then I received such divine tenderness, so specifically for me, the one who had cursed God, that I was forever changed. Jack died a month later, but my relationship to God is now based on unconditional love—on both sides. If I had not been angry with God, I would never have known the fullness of God’s love.
