TUESDAY SOAP! SCRIPTURE: Matthew 1:18-21,24 NLT 18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. 20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. Joseph, son of David, the angel said, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins....24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. OBSERVATION: At a first glance, this section of Chapter 1 sounds like a summary of a soap opera. However, instead of drama being the highlight, Josephs obedience to the Lords command is what really stands out. APPLICATION: Imagine being in Josephs shoes: Youre about to marry a woman who youve never been intimate with and she suddenly claims to be pregnant with the child of God. You would probably think your fiancé has gone crazy! I mean, Joseph was about to end the engagement! Thats how far-fetched he thought Marys claim was. However, when an angel spoke to Joseph, it was confirmation that he was part of a bigger plan set forth by God himself. Josephs obedience was key to the Lords plan, and our obedience to Him is just as important. God has a plan for each of our lives; our role is to listen, be patient, and act on what He commands us to do. Joseph could have disregarded the angel and divorced Mary anyway, but instead he chose to listen to Gods message and follow the path He had set before him. PRAYER: God, I pray that we share in Josephs obedience. Help us realize even in hard and confusing times that Your plan is greater than ours. We want to keep living for you in every way we can. Thank you for continuing to speak into our lives and leading us. We love you. Amen.
