TUESDAY TRIVIA 2/11/14 QUESTION #1 ANSWERS In last weeks trivia question #1, it was pointed out that THE INVISIBLE WOMAN had been nominated for the Oscar for Best Costume Design. This was the only Oscar nomination that the film received. I tend to be a little suspicious about films that just receive Oscar recognition for the look of the film. Sometimes the effort and artistry to achieve that look is not accompanied by proficiency in creating compelling characters and engaging stories. I was very pleasantly surprised to find THE INVISIBLE WOMAN to be very subtle and thought-provoking film that certainly warranted Oscar consideration in several other categories beyond costume design. I thought that Felicity Jones delivered a terrific performance in the title role. The other films in the Best Costume Design category this year are 12 YEARS A SLAVE, AMERICAN HUSTLE, THE GRANDMASTER, and THE GREAT GATSBY. Can you match all of the films with their number of Oscar nominations and their rating from critics as tabulated by the Rottentomatoes website. FILMS A. 12 YEARS A SLAVE B. AMERICAN HUSTLE C. THE GRANDMASTER D. THE GREAT GATSBY E. THE INVISIBLE WOMAN OSCAR NOMINATIONS AND CRITICS RATING 1. One nomination and 76% 2. Two nominations (including Best Cinematography) and 75% 3. 10 nominations (including Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay) and 93% 4. Two nominations (including Best Production Design) and 49% 5. Nine Nominations (including Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay) and 96% CLUE: The question gives away E-1 since there was only one nomination given to THE INVISIBLE WOMAN. Two films have received several nominations. What distinguishes them? How many actors have nominated for Oscars in which categories? Which one is adapted from another work and which was written directly for the screen (original screenplay)? For the two films with two nominations, which one was less well-liked by critics (though not necessarily by filmgoers)? ANSWERS: A-5 (Nine nominations including one for Chiwetel Ejiofor as Best Actor and one for John Ridley who adapted Solomon Northups memoir for film); B-3 (Ten nominations including on for Amy Adams as Best Actress and for Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell for Best Original Screenplay); C-2 (A Best Cinematography nomination for Wong Kar Wais THE GRANDMASTER. This was a spectacular looking martial arts tale about the man who would train Bruce Lee); D-4 (Baz Luhrmans THE GREAT GATSBY had a stunning look that didnt necessarily thrill everyone--especially critics); and E-1.
