A full day tour to explore Istanbul, a fascinating city straddling two continents which, under the name Byzantium and Constantinople was the capital of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, and in 1453, became the third and last Capital of the Ottomans. Visit the Blue Mosque, recognizable from its six minarets, built between 1609 and 1616 for Sultan Ahmet I and decorated inside with 21,043 tiles from Iznik in a dominant blue color; the Hippodrome where political, cultural, and sports activities took place during Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman times; Topkapi Palace, the residence of the Ottoman sultans between the end of the 15th and the first half of the 19th centuries, with its treasures, terraces overlooking the Marmara Sea, the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn... You will end the day at the historical Grand Bazaar. Lunch during sightseeing. Day 3, Wed, Dec 03: Morning lecture by Runoko Rashidi on the African Presence in the Middle East and the Ottoman World, visit imposing the Hagia Sophia which marked the apogee of Byzantine Emperor Justinians reign. Then cruise on the Bosphorus that separates Asia from Europe and connects the Marmara Sea to the Black Sea. You will get the best views of the city and most of the historical monuments in Istanbul. All along the strait and on both shores, you will discover the marble Palaces of Dolmabahce, Beylerbeyi, the beautiful wooden Ottoman villas called yali (water-side residences), the medieval fortresses etc. Lunch at a seafood restaurant along the Bosphorus. Afternoon, visit of Suleiman Mosque; one of the best works of Sinan, the most famous ottoman architect and the Spice Market with its exotic spices and aromas. At the end of the day, visit Rustempasa Mosque, well decorated with Iznik tiles inside... Drive back to hotel. Day 4, Thur, Dec 04: In the morning visit the Royal Museum of the Orient with Runoko Rashidi. Cross the suspended bridge over the Bosphorus to reach the Asian side of Istanbul. Drive up to Camlica Hill where you will enjoy one of the best panoramas over the city. Lunch at Bostanci district: Kebabs & grill. Discover the residential quarters of Asian Istanbul such as Bagdat Avenue. Then visit the typical market of Kadikoy district. At the end of the day, return by boat to the Galata Bridge. Drive back to hotel. In the evening You will attend a folklore show in a festive Oriental atmosphere. It will consist of Turkish traditional dances and songs with many other surprises. Midmorning city tour plus lunch Day 7 Sun, Dec 07: DOUALA/BUEA After breakfast, leave for Buea, the colonial capital of Cameroon under German rule in the 1930’s. We visit the old German colonial governor‘s residence standing majestically at the foot of mount Cameroon. Overnight Mountain Hotel or similar. Lecture German influence in Cameroon. Day 8, Mon. Dec 08: BUEA/KRIBI 240km - early departure Transfer to the seaside city of Kribi, via Edea crossing Pont D’Allamand, (German Bridge) check into the Framotel or similar Tara Plage. After lunch take a pirogue ride to visit the Batwa (THE PYGMIES) village of Lobe. Interact with the residents and study the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Equatorial forest. Continue to the magnificent Lobe Water Falls (the Lobi River cascades down into the sea, a unique feature). Kribi overnight. Day 9, Tues, Dec 09: KRIBI/YAOUNDE (310km) Highlights Benedictine Museum of MT Febe, Cameroon Art Musuem over night in Yaounde Day 10, Wed, Dec 10: YAOUNDE- Bafia-BANDJOUN-FOUMBAN (400km) After breakfast head towards the Western region of Cameroon on the way visit the Bandjoun chefferie and museum to discover some of the rich cultural heritage of the Bamileke traditions in the west Region of the country’s highlands. Later continue to Foumban for dinner and overnight Paradise Hotel Day 11, Thur, Dec 11: FOUMBAM-BAFOUSSAM-BEMENDA Early morning after breakfast, welcomed with a dance show then visit to the Sultan’s palace and private Royal museum. Continue to the Sultan’s mosque and market and then the artisan market. After lunch drive to Bamenda, stopover in Bali, a traditional village 25 km from Bemenda with a big handicraft center. Visit the FON Palace of Bali overnight Ayamba Hotel Bamenda Day 12, Fri, Dec 12 BAMENDA-BAFUT- BALI – DSCHANG - 135 km Bafut - the palace a (UNESCO World heritage site) constructed hundreds of years ago. See the mystical hut known as the “ACHUM”, and visit the museum. Enjoy a performance of traditional Juju mask dances. Drive to Bamenda for a city tour that takes us to the pres craft centre Commercial Avenue and the central market.
