TUT and City of Tshwane partner to create a new future for the city The City of Tshwane (CoT) and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) formalised a partnership to develop the City during the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) at the Centurion Council Chambers recently. The MoA, signed by the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, and Prof Nthabiseng Ogude, TUT’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, is in line with the CoT’s 2055 long-term strategy aimed at improving the quality of living across the metro, revitalising the inner city, boosting economic development and attracting investment. The CoT aims to strengthen relations between higher education institutions in Tshwane, where those institutions will address some of the major challenges faced by the CoT. These challenges include water and electricity losses, finding alternative sources of energy, challenges related to health, inadequate economic development and more. TUT will anchor health and poverty alleviation, economic development and the creation of a Smart City. Executive Mayor, Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, pointed out some of the immediate requirements of the CoT that have to be addressed urgently. “Water that is unaccounted for is costing us a lot of money and we look forward to addressing such issues in partnership with academic institutions as soon as yesterday,” he said. He added that he was excited about the agreement because it would enable the City to resolve a range of problems simultaneously and at a much lower cost. After the signing, Prof Ogude also expressed great enthusiasm, saying that this was a milestone for the institution. “This is not just any MoA; the approach is different because we already have concrete projects in place. We have an opportunity to make an immediate impact on the CoT through these practical interventions.”
