Facts If You Watch WHAT: Rodeo Girls WHEN: Dec. 11, 11 p.m. WHERE: A&E Facts If You Watch WHAT: Rodeo Girls WHEN: Dec. 11, 11 p.m. WHERE: A & E “Rodeo Girls” will showcase “beautiful model types who can also ride horses at 50 miles per hour,” explained Ron Rice, the Suntan King who founded Hawaiian Tropic in Ormond Beach. It’s a novel formula since “there has never been a rodeo reality show before. You have a good mix of characters to get the interest of the audience,” Rice said. Darcy LaPier, Rice’s former wife and mother of their daughter, Sterling Rice, is a producer and star of show. A&E, the cable channel, has described her as a “tabloid staple” and “a model-turned-rodeo-queen Darcy ‘No Fear’ LaPier. With three famous husbands behind her, Darcy brings a big checkbook as well as her grit and determination to the competition.” LaPier also was married to Belgian action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme and Herbalife founder Mark Hughes. After the death of Hughes from an overdose, LaPier “moved out of Hollywood and got away from it all,” said Rice. She retreated to a horse ranch outside of Portland, Ore., and remade herself as a rodeo queen. Sterling Rice soon joined her mom at the ranch after living with Rice in Ormond Beach. “She lived with me for her first 11 years,” Rice said. “I taught her how to be a boy. I figured, well, it’s time for her to go learn how to be a girl. So I sent her back to live with her mom in Portland. She grew up there riding all those horses.” Sterling, now 23, will also appear in the show, but her mom is the “champion rider.” Rice described rodeo and barrel racing as an addicting sport. 1 2 Next Page All rights reserved.
