TWU members from the South Australian and Northern Territory branches today rallied to highlight safety concerns after a fatal truck smash on Monday killed 2. Transpacific, the national body charged with providing the waste removal service, have voluntarily grounded its fleet of more than 2800 trucks while independent safety inspections are carried out. Workers have been suspended with pay. Transport Workers’ Union National Secretary Tony Sheldon said the decision was further evidence of the economic pressure imposed on transport companies and their drivers.
