TYLER PERRY HAS LOST MY RESPECT, & CREATIVE AMERICANS SHOULD - TopicsExpress

TYLER PERRY HAS LOST MY RESPECT, & CREATIVE AMERICANS SHOULD DEMAND THE USPTO NIX BOTH CLAIMS...and reverse their ruling for Tyler Perry. This seriously upsets me. Its a matter of creative freedom that hes infringing - not just religious freedom. No one - NO ONE - has the right to take a Public Domain phrase/philosophy/movement, and lay claim to it for money making purposes. EVER. Perry is claiming it for entertainment purposes - supposedly for a movie, tv show, etc... - but Ive been a writer for more than 35 years, and have been repeatedly told that you cant protect a title or an idea. Yet, the USPTO has awarded Perry such an advantage. The term What would Jesus do? has been around forever. From the first time in print in the late 1800s, to the youth movement in the 90s, to singers whove recorded songs using the phrase over the last decade. What is Perry going to do - sue pastors for using it, or bracelet makers whove been producing for YEARS? Its not just the WWJD issue that has me outraged - its that somebody (supposedly a Christian), can be SO ARROGANT that they walk all over EVERYONE to make a buck out of something that CLEARLY is a concept and has belonged to the public for more than a century. I have ZERO respect for Tyler Perry now. And encourage fans everywhere to distance themselves from him based on principle. hollywoodreporter/thr-esq/tyler-perry-wins-what-would-716455
