Tabitha Winfrey may someday be a success story for the City of Buffalo. But without a laser-like focus by politicians, business leaders and the nonprofit world on the types of long-term programs that will help connect unemployed or underemployed residents to today’s jobs, we risk leaving thousands like her even further behind... New census estimates of the city’s poverty released last week paint a starkly darker picture. Overall poverty rates have barely budged. In fact, they have nudged up when the rest of the country has trended down. And the city has the downright depressing distinction of having the third-highest poverty rate for children among the country’s largest cities. — The Buffalo News
