Tackling problems in the housing market Kate Barker, a former - TopicsExpress

Tackling problems in the housing market Kate Barker, a former member of the Bank of England’s MPC, says that to tackle the problems in the housing market, more must be done to boost housing supply and dampen demand. She remarks that the Lyons review provided some answers, but specifies some additional recommendations. These include: identifying more housing land in local plans; urging local authorities to co-operate better; encouraging councils to act as lead developers where necessary; and pinpointing sites for new garden cities or garden suburbs. Ms Barker adds that the taxation of housing should be reformed. She states that charging capital gains tax on house-prices rises would go some way to rebalancing demand and supply. thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Economy/article1478220.ece
