Taiwan Attracts Foreign Enterprises Establish Regional Headquarters (part4) Taiwan’s geographic and industrial advantages make it a favorable choice for logistics operations, and the CNC Line of France has made use of the island’s superior human resources and the positive development of cross-strait relations to establish it as the mother company’s Asia-Pacific logistics center for all Asia-Pacific route and fleet planning as well as for the exploration of potential businesses, leading to a large growth in revenue. UPS of the United States has set up its Trans Pacific Hub in Taiwan, where it transships all of its cargo between Asia and European/American destinations. Seeing the additional room for development provided by Taiwan’s integration into the international trade system, UPS has dispatched larger cargo aircraft to Taiwan. In the field of services, Taiwan has historical ties with Japan and a high level of acceptance of Japanese culture. Numerous Japanese companies have chosen Taiwan as their first overseas business location, from which they proceed on to develop other Asia-Pacific areas. One such company is NEC. NEC Taiwan derives 80% of its revenue from IT solutions; it has localized its 7-Eleven POS system and has made the island into a base for the export of services, developing overseas markets along with the Uni-President Group. DBS Bank of Singapore, in pursuit of the “Greater China” concept, is developing its business not only in Taiwan but is providing services for Taiwanese businesses operating in the Greater China and ASEAN markets; data on the firm’s Taiwanese customers can be used by the parent company’s business locations in other overseas locations, greatly enhancing service efficiency. The tea chain CoCo is another example of a company that operates a global business from a headquarters in Taiwan. The island’s ICT industry provides strong support for the company’s global operations, and the intensely competitive environment at home has helped it develop into a leader in the Asia-Pacific region. The company’s sales outlets are now spread throughout mainland China, Southeast Asia, and the United States. The Ministry of Economic Affairs will continue strengthening Taiwan’s advantages in the future, with a focus on expanding the use of Taiwan by foreign enterprises as a regional headquarters in the fields of manufacturing and processing, manpower, market information, trial point, and knowledge. By pinpointing potential investment projects, organizing investment promotion missions to Europe, America, and Japan, providing comprehensive business-stabilizing services, and creating favorable investment environment, the government hopes to attract 300 foreign companies to set up regional headquarters in Taiwan by 2015.
