EXPLORING MANHATTANS FOREST: HIKE THROUGH INWOOD HILL PARK WITH THE NATURAL AREAS CONSERVANCY AND ECOLOGIST/AUTHOR DR. ERIC SANDERSON DATE: Saturday, September 13, 2014 TIME: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. LOCATION: Meet at the Payson Center in Payson Playground Dyckman Street, one block west of Payson Avenue Inwood Hill Park EVENT & PHOTO-OP: Join Vice President of the Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC) Sarah Charlop-Powers, Senior Conservation Ecologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society and NAC Board Member Dr. Eric W. Sanderson, Research Social Scientist for the USDA Forest Service Lindsay K. Campbell, and Northern Manhattan Parks Administrator Jennifer Hoppa for a walking seminar on the ecological importance and social meaning of NYC’s natural areas through the historic lens of Manhattans last natural forest. DETAILS: Dr. Eric Sanderson, author and director of the Mannahatta and Welikia Projects will discuss the Inwood Hill Park of 400 years ago as reconstructed through his ground-breaking work. NAC ecologists and United States Forest Service social scientists will highlight findings from recent assessments conducted in Inwood Hill Park. Inwood is home to the largest remnant native Tulip-Oak-Hickory forest in Manhattan. In the past 30 years that NYC Parks Natural Resources Group has managed this forest, work has included removing abandoned cars, preventing fire, invasive species eradication, tree planting, and canopy gap management. Future management of this park will be informed by the social and ecological work conducted by the NAC. Please be prepared with walking shoes and water.
