Take a look at Hazelnut Oil: Cooking with nut oils is a great way to incorporate the benefits of nuts into your diet, without buying expensive packets of whole nuts. It’s particularly good if you’re not all that fond of nut butters, but want to make sure you don’t miss out on the nutrients they contain. Hazelnut oil: rich in vitamin E We stock two varieties of hazelnut oil at Naturally Good Food. Both are in 250ml bottles, with one from Emile Noel and the other from Clearspring. Hazelnuts are great for making oil: the fruit of the hazelnut tree is extremely rich in oil, with levels of about 50% to 65%. In the two varieties we stock, both of which are organic, the nuts are grown by traditional methods, without artificial pesticides or fertilisers. Hazelnut oil is a great source of oleic acid, which reduces ‘bad cholesterol’ in the body. It’s also very good for rehydrating the skin, which can be a concern now that we’re in the season of overly centrally heated, dry working and living environments. Hazelnuts are one of the best known sources of vitamin E, which is essential for the healthy functioning of heart and other muscles, and important for reproductive health. They’re also rich in fibre, folate, the B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc and potassium. These oils have a lovely strong, nutty flavour – and the special knack of bringing out the flavours of all the other ingredients you’re using. Here are some quick ideas for use: Use in a salad dressing, particularly with a fruity vinegar Drizzle over roasted root vegetables Use as a dressing for steamed vegetables, or to stir-fry them Makes a good pesto, with basil Excellent with game recipes Good for use in stir-fries and other Chinese recipes Wonderfully moisturising as a massage oil A great facial toner, with astringent properties (and particularly good for acne-sufferers) Or…simply open the bottle and inhale!
