Take a minute to look over the official Green Fact Sheet for the new MPH Learning Commons building. Were not sure yet whether it will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Qualified, but these features are certainly moving us closer to that goal. Check it out! Fact Sheet: Green Features of the MPH Learning Commons: The design of the new Learning Commons at Manlius Pebble Hill School incorporates numerous environment-friendly features, including many of those contained in construction guidelines developed by the U.S. Green Buildings Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Among the environmentally responsible design features of the new library facility: • The project will be constructed with a preference for locally produced construction products containing a high proportion of recycled materials. • Taking advantage of being on Pebble Hill, the design utilizes infiltration devices to absorb and filter storm water collected from the roof. • The facility will employ energy-efficient interior lighting with controls that automatically dim artificial room lighting as natural light enters through the windows. • The windows will include light shelves that reflect and diffuse a portion of the entering sunlight deeper into the building. • The plumbing system features low-flow faucets and toilets with dual-level flush controls to conserve water. • Computer modeling was used to predict the annual energy consumption of various heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; the system design was adjusted, based on the computer analysis, to minimize energy consumption. • Specific construction techniques and low gas-emitting materials have been specified to further ensure excellent air quality. Prior to occupancy next fall, the building will be thoroughly flushed with fresh air to remove contaminants.
