Take a peek at an excerpt from the most recent newsletter from a missionary friend of ours, Liesl Williams: His Hands Bear Scars --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- MARCH 16, 2014 Dear All, Take a moment to look at your hands. Go ahead! I’ll wait. What do you hands say about the things you’ve done? Are you a teacher? Are your hands covered with whiteboard marker stains? Are you a carpenter? Are you hands strong and rough? Are you a musician? Are there callouses on your hands from hours of practice? Are you a rock-climber? Are there nicks and scratches on your knuckles? Are you a mother? Are your hands still damp from the dishes? A couple weeks ago I found myself standing in the rich black soil of the Jarai fields, pulling green onions out in clumps and listening to the lilt of Jarai being spoken around me. We pulled out heaps of the green onions, packing them into rice bags which we carried to the nearby stream. Standing thigh-high in cold spring water, we washed each clump free of dirt, stacking them in preparation for sorting, tying, and selling. As I was getting ready to step out of the water, I happened to look down at my hands and see a blister forming on my thumb where I had, obviously, used the digging stick the wrong way. The blister on my thumb, along with a previous blister from peeling cassava, became a constant reminder of what I had done in Phum Blang that day. Today in church, Bounoeuy preached a sermon about the inadequacy of human love compared with the vastness of God’s love for us. He compared our love for each other to the love of a son for his father, the love of a husband for his wife, and the love of a mother for her newborn child. As time moves forward though, the son becomes rebellious, the husband finds fault in his wife’s decisions, or the mother watches her precious baby grow up and disobey her. Our human love is tainted with sin. No matter how strong we love each other, we cannot compare our human love to God’s love. It is because of God’s love that He set in motion a plan that would involve all of humankind. It is because of God’s love that He promised, through the ages, a Deliverer who would wipe clean His people of their sin. And it is because of God’s love that the hands of His Son, Jesus Christ, bear the scars that should be ours—the scars He received when He died in our place, willingly taking the punishment for our sins. If our hands tell of what we have done, Christ’s hands tell the greatest story of all!
