Take a wander round Pollok House’s upper floors for a fascinating insight into the Maxwell family’s Edwardian lifestyle. Their everyday rooms included a billiard room (now a dining room), a music room and a library designed to hold 7,000 books. Period furniture and furnishings lend the rooms a lived-in feel and the artwork on display alone is worth a visit. Look out for the famous collection of Spanish paintings by El Greco, Goya and Murillo among others, as well as works by William Blake, Raeburn and Guthrie. In the basement, the vast servants’ quarters show the scale of operations needed to run the place. There were 48 servants for just three family members in the mansion’s heyday and you can still see where they all lived and worked. Some of these servants’ rooms are now shops selling goods including books, gifts and food, while the original kitchen is now home to the Edwardian Kitchen Restaurant. Stop off and refuel before heading outside to enjoy a stroll around the grounds and Pollok Country Park, taking in the old stable courtyard, the walled garden and glasshouses, and the woodland and riverside walks.
