Take hold of the eternal life Paul said: ... is proud, knows nothing , but doting about questions and strifes of words , whereof cometh envy, strife , reviling, evil suspicions. Foolish disputes corrupt minds and destitute men of truth, who suppose that godliness a means of gain [ business to make money , means of survival ] , from such withdraw thyself . [ And indeed it is a source of great gain , for it ] is great gain in godliness with contentment [ that contentment which refers to the feeling of inner satisfaction ] . ( 1 Timothy 6:4-6 ) But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish [ useless , wicked ] and hurtful lusts , which drown men in destruction and perdition because root of all evil is the love of money , and some by longing , have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. (Verses 9 and 10) Then I made some recommendations to Timothy about behavior that should continue to sign your calling and election : But thou, O man of God , flee these things , pursue righteousness [who is right with God and have true goodness ] , mercy [ that is the devout fear of God and be like Christ ] , faith, love, patience , meekness. Fight the good fight of faith , lay hold on eternal life to which you were also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses . You command [ solemnly ] before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus , who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate. That thou keep this commandment without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ [ the Messiah ] . ( 1 Timothy 6:11-14 ) These recommendations reveal five specific warnings also concern us today. Lets study each of them in detail and see how they apply to our lives.
