Take note of this study! If youve been in a college classroom - TopicsExpress

Take note of this study! If youve been in a college classroom lately, then you are familiar with the sights and sounds of students furiously typing on their laptops while others are talking. Psychologists at UCLA recently measured the efficacy of this laptop note-taking phenomenon versus good ol fashion pen and paper. They tested the recall and conceptual mastery of a lecture by two student cohorts: one group took notes by hand, one on a laptop. The by-hand note takers showed significantly better recall of facts and concepts, both thirty minutes and one week after the lecture. The scientists believe hand note taking may better engage our cognitive processes, and give our brain time to process and reframe the information. In contrast, our brain appears to treat typing as a mindless activity. Sounds similar to last months Curio about how our brain outsources memory to our camera phones. Hmm... kids are no longer taught handwriting after the first grade in favor of keyboarding. Seems like educators might want to take notes--by hand please--on this latest research.
