I used to make trompo from the fruit of bakhaw . I have witnessed how the mangroves were destroyed to paved way for fishponds. Only later on, when flood is a yearly occurence in that town that I realized the importance of mangroves. There are no more breeding grounds for fish , crustaceans and mollusks. No more food for the marine life. Iloilo City under the leadership of Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog recognized the importance of Mangroves. The Iloilo river is now home to a majestic mangroves that breaths life to the river , provides a breeding ground and food for the marine life. It prevents soil erosion and balances the ecosystem. In no matter how rapid the development of Iloilo City, preserving, protecting ,and the rehabilitation of environmental riches , such as the mangroves at Iloilo River is PARAMOUNT and will not take a back seat as stressed by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
