Taken from NIFC Website-July 23, 2014 Weather conditions continue to help firefighters with their containment efforts throughout Oregon and Washington. Lightning sparked new initial attack fires in the Great Basin. Four of these fires grew to large fire status and are located in Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Two MAFFS C-130 air tankers and support personnel from the 153rd Airlift Wing (Wyoming Air National Guard) have been deployed to Boise, ID to support wildland fire suppression operations in the western U.S. Weather: Showers and thunderstorms will continue in the northwest U.S. and Northern Rockies today as a strong upper level trough of low pressure moves inland with widespread precipitation and breezy winds. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected over portions of the eastern Great Basin and central Rockies where it will be breezy with moist storms. A warming and drying trend will begin today in southern California and the remainder of the southwest quarter of the U.S. The northeast U.S. through the Ohio Valley will see showers and thunderstorms along a cold front, while the Gulf Coast region will also have lingering shower activity.
