Taking a step towards drive against fake permanent account number - TopicsExpress

Taking a step towards drive against fake permanent account number the income tax department is considering making proof of date-of-birth mandatory for issuance of PAN Cards. According to IT department statistics, 170 million people in India possess PAN cards but the number of tax return is only about 30 millions. Main reason behind this is people who do not file income tax return also get PAN card just to use it as an identification proof. To get a PAN card one needs to provide a ration card and rent receipts which can easily be faked. To overcome this problem and to curtail the number of PAN cards, Ration Cards and rent receipts might no longer be accepted as proofs of identity and address for issuance of a PAN Card, Department might ask for proof of date-of-birth certificate for issuing PAN card
