"Taksim has been the epicenter of the protests in Istanbul since they began late May. While crowds also gathered occasionally in Kadıköy on the other side of the city, the protests there would be small, calm, and without any police intervention. Not tonight. For the first time ever, riot police intervened the protests in Kadıköy with panzers, water cannons and tear gas, turning it into a warzone. The protesters resisted the attacks by putting up barricades and attacking the police vehicles. It is now past 3am, and sporadic clashes continue."
