Talabani: Is He Recovering? Report : shalaw mohammed_ Berlin. The General Secretary of the PUK and the President of Iraq Jalal Talabani is still unable to speak and has been losing weight recently but the doctors are hopeful that he will be able to speak soon. One of Masoud Barzani’s brothers visited the President twice while on a trip to Germany. A reporter of Hawlati newspaper visited Charité hospital in Berlin, Germany where Mr. Talabani is being hospitalized and he obtained new information about Talabani’s health from the hospital staff and from some individuals close to Talabani there. “Talabani had been breathing with the help of machines but his condition is less critical now,” stated an anonymous source that is aware of Mr. Talabani’s condition. Jalal Talabani suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage on the 17th of December 2012 in Baghdad. As a result, he lost conscience. After several days, he was transferred to Charité hospital in Germany through a KRG representative. The source said that Mr. Talabani has been transferred to another section in the hospital where he receives physical therapy after residing in the neurology department for one year. “He lost most of his sense of touch during the past year, however the physical therapy team assured that these senses are starting to return now,” he added. “The greatest concern now is that his weight has dropped in an unhealthy way and he is still unable to speak but the special team informed us that he should be able to talk soon,” the source continued. Pictures of Talabani have only been published twice since he was taken to Germany. The only person who has permission to speak about his health is Dr. Najmaddin Kareem, Talabani’s physician, member of the PUK political bureau and the governor of Kirkuk. Hawlati has tried several times in the past one month to get information from Najmaddin Kareem but all his tries were unsuccessful. His relatives and those who have visited him always confirm that Talabani’s health is improving. Last month Najmaddin Kareem declared that Talabani went on a car tour in the streets of Berlin as a sign that he is returning to good health. The source mentioned that “Talabani’s tour of Berlin occurred when he was transferred to another department of the hospital for treatment.” During his fifteen month stay at hospital, most of the Kurdistan region, Iraqi officials and the PUK political bureau members have not been allowed to see him. According to Hawlati’s information nobody but his wife, his sons, Latif Rashid the husband of his sister-in-law Shanaz Ibrahim, Dilshad Barzani the KRG representative in Germany and Masoud Barzani’s brother the president of the KRG and neurologist Dr. Sherko Fatih have been allowed to visit him. Dr. Sherko Fatih who had headed the team of the physicians in Baghdad decided to transfer Talabani to Charite’ hospital in Berlin. “Dilshad Barzani was able to see Talabani twice with the help of Talabani’s son Qubad Talabani while Masoud Barzani has not been allowed to visit,” a source close to the KRG representative in Germany told Hawlati. According to the information obtained by Hawlati, Talabani is being protected by three different security units during all visits; two German policemen at the first door, another three at the second door and at the door of his room are his nephew and a trustworthy guard appointed by his wife.
