Tales of a liberty advocate, Southern Utah edition: Two incumbents facing liberty-minded challengers are referencing the Libertas Institute Legislator index (libertasutah.org/2014), each with completely different angles. John R. Westwood, a Representative who scored a measly 38% this year (the lowest ranked Republican Representative, also scoring below all Democrats but one) sent an email to delegates dismissing our index as the product of a self-proclaimed Libertarian think tank. They are not an unbiased organization or even a Republican organization. Obviously, with a poor score, hes trying to attack the messenger rather then address the actual message—his voting record. Westwoods challenger is Blake Cozzens. On the flip side, in the same area of Utah, Senator Evan Vickers scored a 74% this year (he ranked 29% last year) and sent a flier to delegates that reads: Conservative Experience Counts! Senator Vickers has one of the most conservative records in the entire Utah Senate. (Source: the 2014 Libertas Legislator Index) This despite the fact that we dont use the word conservative at all. Vickers challenger is Casey Anderson. So which is it? Are we a dismissible Libertarian group (note that capital L which is not proper usage), or a praiseworthy barometer of Utah conservatism? Whatever the answer, this much is clear: our work is *working*. Delegates and concerned citizens have been provided information with which to hold legislators accountable—whether in praise of their good votes, or in opposition to their bad ones—and theyre successfully using it to shake things up. Me? Im sitting back and enjoying the theatrics…
