Talk about a broken Republican record, let me just say one word: “Benghazi.” The Republicans are forming yet one more congressional investigation of the killing of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans there, but of course their focus couldn’t be narrower: its possible uses in the midterm elections of 2014 and above all its anti-Hillary potential in 2016. It seems to be their all-purpose Obamacare fallback position. And yet not one Republican on the new committee is likely to discuss the real issue at stake: what the U.S. intervention in Libya let loose – the destabilization, that is, of significant parts of Northern Africa. Some of the heavy arms that the wigged-out Islamist group Boko Haram is wielding in Nigeria in their nightmarish campaign, for instance, came from autocrat Muammar Gaddafi’s arsenal after his fall. Juan Cole’s writes this morning, “Since Obamacare is increasingly a wildly popular success, the GOP is flailing around looking for an issue, any issue to help fundraising for the fall congressional campaigns. In a vote that will live in infamy, the House GOP has decided to create a select committee to investigate the 2012 Benghazi consular attack yet again.
