Talking baseball with a buddy whos son is struggling with with his swing. He says he thinks his son is over swinging and is all over the place with his follow through. The problem with young players is they like comfortability. They like to enter the box with what they know. Kids are asked to stand in the box and swing a bat. The issue is thats not what theyre doing. Most if not all problems begin from the ground up. For whatever reason kids feel most comfortable with their feet just inside their shoulders. They need to start wider...much wider with taller kids. Imo a wide base makes it much easier to produce a consistent and mechanically sound swing. The lack of balance at follow through is not the problem. ...its a symptom. Its a sign that the hitter does not have enough base and his body is trying to over compensate for a high center of gravity. A wide base also helps players stay back on certain pitches...especially off speed and breaking balls. With a narrow stance kids naturally need a front leg kick to initiate the swing and many times can get their front side set in time or even worse....too early. Sure, there are great hitters like Mike trout that have a pronounced leg kick...The difference is he starts wide and stays wide. He does a great job of keeping his hands mirrored to his back side hip as well. My advice to young hitters....start wide...trust your hands and have fun...
